The AISSEE 2027 application form is the first real test of a Sainik School admission — and unlike the exam, your child does not sit it. You do. It is filled online on the National Testing Agency portal, and it is unforgiving: a wrong date of birth, a photograph in the wrong dimensions, or a category selected without a certificate in hand can end the attempt before the syllabus even matters.
In 35 years of preparing students at Amaravathinagar — quite literally next door to the Sainik School main gate — we have seen more children lose a year to a form than to a difficult Maths paper. This guide walks through the whole thing in the order you will actually meet it.
The form is expected to open in October 2026 and close in November 2026, with the exam in January 2027. Do not wait for the last week. The portal slows to a crawl in the final 48 hours — every single year.
When the AISSEE 2027 Form Opens and Closes
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts AISSEE once a year. For the 2027–28 academic session, the expected timeline is:

These are expected dates based on the pattern of previous cycles. The only authority on the actual schedule is the official information bulletin published on aissee.nta.nic.in. Read the bulletin the day it releases — not a summary of it, the bulletin itself.
What You Need Ready Before You Open the Form
Do not start filling until every item below is on your desk, scanned and correctly sized. The session times out, and half-finished forms cause duplicate registrations.
- The child's date of birth proof — birth certificate, exactly as it will appear on all future records
- A recent passport-size photograph with a plain background, in the file size and dimensions the bulletin specifies
- The child's signature and the parent's signature, scanned separately
- Category certificate (SC / ST / OBC-NCL) in the child's name, valid and in the prescribed format
- Defence service certificate, if applying under the defence or ex-servicemen ward quota
- Residence proof for the home-state claim
- The school certificate confirming Class V (for Class VI entry) or Class VIII (for Class IX entry)
- A working email address and mobile number you control — every future update goes here
A warning about photographs. More rejections come from photo and signature uploads than from any other field. Get them done at a studio that has processed AISSEE uploads before, and keep a digital copy in three places. If the photo is blurred, cropped at the chin, or carries a date stamp when the bulletin forbids one, the application can be treated as incomplete.
Step 1 — Registration
You begin by creating a candidate account. This asks for the child's name, date of birth, mobile number and email. Three rules here:
- Spell the name exactly as it appears on the birth certificate. Not the school-register spelling, not the shortened version the family uses. If the certificate says Kishore Kumar S, that is what goes in.
- Enter the date of birth from the certificate, not from memory. This single field decides eligibility, and it cannot be softened later.
- Use a phone number and email that will still work in April 2027. Every admit card, result and counselling notice goes to them.
Once registered, the system issues an application number. Write it down on paper and photograph it. You will need it for the admit card, the result and the counselling round.
Step 2 — The Application Form Itself
This is the long section. It covers the child's personal details, parents' details, category and quota claims, school details, and choice of Sainik Schools.
Choosing your Sainik Schools
You are asked to give a preference order of schools. For a Tamil Nadu family, Sainik School Amaravathinagar is the home-state option, and this matters enormously: 67% of seats go to home-state candidates and only 33% to candidates from other states. A Tamil Nadu child competing for a Tamil Nadu seat is competing in a far smaller, far more winnable pool.
Fill the preference order thoughtfully. Do not list a school in Rajasthan second out of curiosity — you may be allotted it.
Category and quota
Claim only what you can prove. If you tick OBC-NCL and cannot produce a valid non-creamy-layer certificate in the prescribed format at verification, the claim collapses and your child is moved to the general list — often below the general cut-off. Step 3 — Uploading Documents
Upload the photograph, both signatures, and the certificates the form asks for. After each upload, open the preview and look at it. The portal will happily accept a sideways signature.
Step 4 — Paying the Fee
The application fee is paid online by card, net banking or UPI. Two things to do the moment payment completes:
- Download the confirmation page. Not a screenshot — the actual PDF the portal generates.
- Check that the status reads "Payment Successful" and the form shows as submitted. A deducted amount with an unsubmitted form is the worst outcome of the whole process, and it happens when parents close the tab too early.
Print two copies of the confirmation page. Keep one in the file you will carry to document verification.
Step 5 — The Correction Window
After the form closes, NTA opens a short correction window — usually three to five days. This is your only chance to fix errors, and even then, some fields are permanently locked (typically the child's name, date of birth and the exam city in some cycles).
Use the window even if you are confident. Sit with the printed confirmation page and read it aloud field by field against the original documents. Reading it aloud catches what reading it silently misses.
Between the form closing in November and the exam in January there are roughly 60 days. That is the entire final revision runway. Families who spend December chasing a corrected certificate lose it. Get the paperwork finished in October.
After You Submit: What Actually Decides Admission
Submitting the form is not admission. The sequence is:
- Written exam in January 2027 — 300 marks for Class VI, 400 marks for Class IX
- Result and merit list in February 2027
- e-Counselling and seat allotment, strictly by merit and quota
- Medical examination at the allotted school
- Document verification with originals

The Mistakes We See Most Often
- Starting the form in the last week and hitting a portal queue
- Uploading a photograph that fails the specification
- Claiming a category without a valid certificate in the prescribed format
- Mis-ordering school preferences and getting allotted a school 2,000 km away
- Using a relative's phone number that later becomes unreachable
- Closing the payment tab before the confirmation page generates
