Before syllabus, before coaching, before anything else: Sainik School eligibility decides whether your child can sit the exam at all. And of all the criteria, age is the one that ends the most applications — because it is checked against a birth certificate, and there is no relaxation for anyone.
We have had parents drive to our campus at Amaravathinagar with a bright, motivated child who was simply four months too old. It is the hardest conversation in this work. So read this section carefully, with the birth certificate in front of you.
For AISSEE 2027, the child must be 10 to 12 years old as on 31 March 2027 for Class VI, and 13 to 15 years old as on 31 March 2027 for Class IX. Age is calculated from the birth certificate. There is no relaxation for any category.

Two practical notes:
- The cut-off date moves with the exam year. For the 2027 session it is 31 March 2027. If your child misses it by a month this year, they may be eligible next year — check the next bulletin rather than assuming.
- The certificate is the authority, not the school register. If the two disagree, fix the discrepancy now, months before document verification, not in April when a provisional seat is on the line.
Class VI or Class IX — Which Entry Should You Aim For?
Most Tamil Nadu families target Class VI, and for good reason. It is the main intake, it has the larger number of seats, and a child who joins at Class VI gets the full seven-year Sainik School experience.
Class IX entry exists but is a much narrower door: fewer vacancies, a harder paper (400 marks, with Maths alone worth 200), and competition from children already inside the military-school ecosystem.
Our honest advice. If your child is currently in Class IV or Class V, aim at Class VI and give it a full run. If your child is in Class VII or VIII, Class IX is worth attempting — but prepare in parallel for RMS and RIMC, which have their own separate entry points and timelines.
Can Girls Apply to Sainik Schools?
Yes. Sainik Schools admit girls, and this is one of the biggest changes in the system's recent history.
In Class VI, each Sainik School reserves 10% of total vacancies or 10 seats, whichever is higher, for girls. At Sainik School Amaravathinagar, that has meant roughly 12 of 116 Class VI seats in recent cycles.

Nationality, Domicile and the 67% Rule
Applicants must be Indian citizens. Beyond that, the rule that shapes your odds is not strictly an eligibility criterion — it is the seat split:
- 67% of seats in each school go to home-state candidates
- 33% go to candidates from other states and UTs

Medical Fitness Is Also an Eligibility Criterion
Parents often treat the medical examination as a formality at the end. It is not. A seat allotted in counselling is provisional until the child clears the medical.
The examination checks vision, hearing, heart, lungs, ENT, skin, speech, kidneys, bones and general health. What If Your Child Is Not Eligible This Year?
This is a more common situation than you would think, and it is not the end of the road.
- Too young? Excellent news. Use the year for foundation work — Vedic Maths, reading speed, reasoning practice. Children who arrive at the exam year already comfortable with the style of AISSEE questions consistently outperform those meeting them for the first time.
- Too old for Class VI but not yet for Class IX? Prepare for the Class IX paper and treat the extra time as an advantage.
- Outside both windows? Look at RMS and RIMC, which have different age bands and entry classes, and at other residential schools with defence-oriented programmes.

- Category certificate, if claiming one, is valid and in the prescribed format

- No uncorrected medical condition that would fail the fitness examination
