What Is Sainik School?
Sainik Schools are residential military schools run by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. They were established to prepare students for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other defence services. In simple words: Sainik School is the first step towards becoming an officer in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force. There are 33 Sainik Schools across India (with 69 new schools recently added), and each one provides:

Reservation categories: Seats are reserved as per government norms for SC, ST, OBC, and other categories. Having the relevant community certificate, income certificate, and nativity certificate ready is important.
Exam Pattern
The AISSEE (All India Sainik School Entrance Examination) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is objective (multiple choice) — so speed and accuracy matter enormously.

Important: There is negative marking in some sections. The IQ section tests logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and spatial ability — things not taught in regular schools. The cut-off varies each year depending on category, state, and competition level.
Admission Process
Make sure your child meets the age and class requirements. Class 5 for Class VI admission (age 10-12), Class 8 for Class IX admission (age 13-15).
When NTA opens applications (usually August–October), register on the official AISSEE website. You'll need: Aadhaar card, birth certificate, passport photo, community certificate, school details.
The application fee is nominal (usually ₹400–₹650 depending on category). Pay online during registration.
Once registration closes, NTA releases admit cards. Download and print your child's admit card — it's required for the exam.
This is the most important step. The AISSEE is not like a school exam. It requires specialised preparation — especially for IQ, Vedic Maths, and exam pattern strategy.
Take your child to the exam centre on the scheduled date. The exam is usually held between December and February.
Results are announced on the NTA website. If your child clears the written exam, they'll be called for a medical examination.
Selected students undergo a medical exam to check fitness. This is standard — not a cause for concern if your child is reasonably healthy.
If your child clears both the written exam and medical exam, they receive an admission offer from the Sainik School of your choice.

Preparation

Most children have never seen IQ-type questions before the exam. Pattern recognition, logical reasoning, series completion — these need dedicated practice, not textbook study.
The exam is timed. Children who can solve maths problems quickly have a massive advantage. Techniques like Vedic Mathematics make a real difference.
The AISSEE has been running for decades. The question types, difficulty levels, and topic weightage follow patterns that can be studied and mastered.
Knowing the answers is one thing. Performing under timed pressure is another. Regular mock tests — under real exam conditions — are the best way to prepare.
The more time your child has to prepare, the better. Starting 6-12 months before the exam gives enough time to cover the syllabus, practise extensively, and build confidence through mock tests.
