How to Join Sainik School — A Complete Guide for Parents

Everything you need to know about Sainik School admission, the AISSEE exam, eligibility, and how to prepare your child.

What Is a Sainik School and Why Do Parents Want Their Child There?

Sainik Schools are residential military schools run by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. They were established to prepare students for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other defence services. In simple words: Sainik School is the first step towards becoming an officer in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force. There are 33 Sainik Schools across India (with 69 new schools recently added), and each one provides:

  • Free or subsidised education from Class VI to Class XII
  • A disciplined military-style environment that builds character and leadership
  • Academic excellence with a focus on national-level competitive readiness
  • Physical fitness training that goes beyond regular school PE
  • Values and patriotism woven into everyday life

For parents in Tamil Nadu, the nearest Sainik School is Sainik School Amaravathinagar — located in Udumalpet, Tiruppur district. Anbaalaya Sainik Academy is situated right next to its main gate — so your child doesn't just prepare for Sainik School, he sees it every day.

AISSEE Exam Pattern — Subjects, Marks, and Format

The AISSEE (All India Sainik School Entrance Examination) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is objective (multiple choice) — so speed and accuracy matter enormously.

How to Apply for Sainik School — Step by Step

  • 1

    Check Eligibility

Make sure your child meets the age and class requirements. Class 5 for Class VI admission (age 10-12), Class 8 for Class IX admission (age 13-15).

  • 2

    Register Online

When NTA opens applications (usually August–October), register on the official AISSEE website. You'll need: Aadhaar card, birth certificate, passport photo, community certificate, school details.

  • 3

    Pay the Application Fee

The application fee is nominal (usually ₹400–₹650 depending on category). Pay online during registration.

  • 4

    Download the Admit Card

Once registration closes, NTA releases admit cards. Download and print your child's admit card — it's required for the exam.

  • 5

    Prepare Your Child

This is the most important step. The AISSEE is not like a school exam. It requires specialised preparation — especially for IQ, Vedic Maths, and exam pattern strategy.

  • 6

    Appear for the Exam

Take your child to the exam centre on the scheduled date. The exam is usually held between December and February.

  • 7

    Check Results

Results are announced on the NTA website. If your child clears the written exam, they'll be called for a medical examination.

  • 8

    Medical Examination

Selected students undergo a medical exam to check fitness. This is standard — not a cause for concern if your child is reasonably healthy.

  • 9

    Final Admission

If your child clears both the written exam and medical exam, they receive an admission offer from the Sainik School of your choice.

Documents You'll Need for AISSEE Application

At Time of Application

  1. Birth certificate
  2. Aadhaar card
  3. Passport-size photographs
  4. School identity card or bonafide certificate
  5. Community certificate (SC/ST/OBC if applicable)

Before End of August (for exam application)

  1. SC or ST community certificate (if applicable)
  2. OBC certificate
  3. Nativity certificate
  4. Income certificate

Keep these documents ready early. Many parents scramble for certificates at the last minute — don't let paperwork hold your child back.

How to Prepare for the AISSEE Exam

The AISSEE is different from school exams. Here's what makes it hard — and how to prepare:

01

IQ Section is Not Taught in School

Most children have never seen IQ-type questions before the exam. Pattern recognition, logical reasoning, series completion — these need dedicated practice, not textbook study.

02

Speed Matters as Much as Knowledge

The exam is timed. Children who can solve maths problems quickly have a massive advantage. Techniques like Vedic Mathematics make a real difference.

03

The Question Paper Has Patterns

The AISSEE has been running for decades. The question types, difficulty levels, and topic weightage follow patterns that can be studied and mastered.

04

Mock Tests Build Exam Temperament

Knowing the answers is one thing. Performing under timed pressure is another. Regular mock tests — under real exam conditions — are the best way to prepare.

05

Start Early

The more time your child has to prepare, the better. Starting 6-12 months before the exam gives enough time to cover the syllabus, practise extensively, and build confidence through mock tests.
