A complete guide to RMS and RIMC admission — eligibility, entrance exams, and how to prepare your child for Rashtriya Military School and RIMC.
Rashtriya Military School
Rashtriya Military Schools (formerly known as King George's Royal Indian Military Schools) are residential schools run by the Ministry of Defence. There are five RMS schools across India:
RMS Belgaum Karnataka
RMS Chail Himachal Pradesh
RMS Bangalore Karnataka
RMS Dholpur Rajasthan
RMS Ajmer Rajasthan
What makes RMS special:
How is RMS different from Sainik School? Both prepare students for a defence career, but RMS schools are older institutions with a distinct military tradition. The admission process, exam pattern, and school culture differ slightly. Many parents apply to both Sainik School and RMS to give their child the best chance.

Exam Pattern

| General Knowledge | Current affairs, general awareness |
| English | Grammar, comprehension, vocabulary |
| Intelligence / IQ | Logical reasoning, pattern recognition |
The RMS exam is similar in structure to the AISSEE but with some differences in difficulty and question style. Children who prepare well for the AISSEE are often well-prepared for the RMS exam too.
| Subject | Details |
|---|---|
| English | Essay, comprehension, grammar |
| Mathematics | Arithmetic, geometry, problem-solving |
| General Knowledge | Current affairs, history, geography |
| Intelligence | Reasoning, pattern recognition |
The RIMC exam includes both objective and descriptive sections. It tests not just knowledge but also the ability to express ideas clearly — especially in English.
After the written exam: Both RMS and RIMC conduct an interview and medical examination for students who clear the written test. The interview assesses personality, confidence, and motivation.
Preparation
Both exams are competitive. Starting 6-12 months before the exam gives your child enough time to build strength in all subjects — especially IQ and English.
Like the AISSEE, RMS and RIMC exams test intelligence and logical reasoning. These sections are not covered in regular school syllabi. Dedicated IQ training is essential.
RIMC especially values English proficiency. Essay writing, comprehension, and grammar need consistent practice. For RMS, English grammar and vocabulary are important.
Previous year question papers reveal the exam's patterns, difficulty level, and commonly tested topics. Solving them under timed conditions builds confidence and speed.
Both RMS and RIMC have an interview round. Your child should be comfortable speaking about themselves, hobbies, current affairs, and why they want to join the military.
The medical examination checks physical fitness. Encourage regular exercise, sports, and outdoor activity. A healthy, active child has nothing to worry about.
Applying to All Three
There's no rule that says your child can only apply for one. Many parents apply to all three — Sainik School (AISSEE), RMS, and RIMC — to maximise their child's chances.
The preparation overlaps significantly. Subjects like Maths, English, IQ, and GK are common across all three exams. A child who prepares well for one is well-prepared for the others too.
The key is to use a coaching system that covers all three exam patterns — so your child isn't caught off guard by the differences.
Strategy: Start with AISSEE preparation as the foundation. The subjects overlap with both RMS and RIMC. With focused coaching, your child can sit all three exams in the same year.
