Most parents prepare intensely for the exam and then meet the AISSEE e-counselling process cold, in February, with a deadline running. It is a mistake, because counselling is where a good score turns into an actual seat — or does not.
The centralised process is run online after the result. Understanding it in July costs you an afternoon. Not understanding it in February can cost the year.
Three things to hold on to: allotment is strictly by merit within your quota, a seat is provisional until the medical and documents clear, and every deadline in counselling is final. There is no informal extension.

Step 1 — Registration Happens Fast
Once the result is out, qualified candidates register for counselling on the official portal using the application number from the form stage. This is why we tell parents to photograph the application number in October: in February you will need it inside a 48-hour window.
- Keep the application number and login details accessible
- Download the scorecard as soon as it publishes
- Check the registered email and mobile daily through February and March
- Read the counselling notice fully — the rules change slightly between cycles
Step 2 — Choice Filling Is the Real Decision
You are asked to order the Sainik Schools you are willing to join. Two principles:
Home state first, always
67% of seats go to home-state candidates; 33% to other states. For a Tamil Nadu child, Sainik School Amaravathinagar is the home-state option — in recent cycles roughly 77 of 116 Class VI seats. Competing there means competing in the larger, softer pool.
Only list schools you would actually send your child to
Allotment is automatic. If you rank a school in another state to "keep options open" and your merit lands you there, that is the seat you are offered. Families then either accept a posting far from home or forfeit and wait a year.
A tip from experience. Sit with the previous years' cut-offs for each school and category before you fill choices. Our cut-off analysis collects what recent cycles looked like at Amaravathinagar, by category.
Step 3 — Allotment: Merit Inside Quota
Allotment is mechanical. The system ranks candidates by score, applies quota rules, and matches them to preferences. No interview, no discretion, no influence — a point worth being blunt about, because there are people who will tell parents otherwise.
Inside your state quota the reserved shares apply: SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, and 25% of the remaining seats for wards of serving defence personnel and ex-servicemen. In Class VI, 10% of vacancies or 10 seats, whichever is higher, are reserved for girls.
An important detail parents miss: if a reserved-category candidate makes the general merit list on their own score, they are admitted against a general seat, and the reserved seat stays available for the next candidate in that category.
Step 4 — Later Rounds and Waiting Lists
Counselling runs in more than one round. Seats vacated by candidates who do not report, fail the medical, or take a different school, flow to the next candidates in merit order.
This means two things:
- A near-miss in round one is not the end. Families give up too early, stop watching the portal, and miss a later allotment.
- Deadlines still apply in later rounds — sometimes shorter ones. Keep checking until the process formally closes.
Do not stop watching the portal after round one. Every cycle, seats move. The families who get them are the ones still paying attention in the third week.
Step 5 — The Provisional Seat
The seat you receive is provisional. Two gates remain:
- Medical examination at the allotted school — vision, hearing, heart, lungs, ENT, skin, speech, kidneys, bones. Detail in our medical guide

Fail either and the seat is withdrawn and passed on. Clear both and the admission is confirmed.
What Parents Should Do Now, in July
- Save the official portal, aissee.nta.nic.in, and check it monthly from September
- Build the document file now, not in March
- Read the nine form mistakes before you fill anything
