AISSEE General Knowledge preparation causes more wasted effort than any other section. Parents buy a thick general-knowledge compendium, the child memorises the tallest buildings in the world, and the paper asks about photosynthesis and the Preamble.
Fifty marks — 25 questions of 2 marks each in the Class VI paper — and most of it comes from school science and social studies, not trivia. Here is what to study.
GK is not a memory contest. Roughly the bulk of it is Class V-level science and social studies, which your child is already learning. Study that properly and top it with a thin layer of awareness.

1. General Science — Study This First
Class V level, and worth the largest share:
- Plants — parts, photosynthesis, reproduction, types
- Animals — classification, habitats, adaptation
- Human body — digestive, respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, nervous systems; sense organs
- Food and nutrition — nutrients, deficiency diseases, balanced diet
- Matter — states, changes of state, solutions
- Light, sound, heat — basic properties
- Force and simple machines — levers, pulleys, inclined planes
- Our environment — natural resources, pollution, conservation
- Solar system — planets, the sun, the moon, eclipses
- Health and disease — communicable diseases, vaccination, hygiene
A child who genuinely knows their Class V science textbook will answer most science questions in this section without any GK book at all.
2. India — Geography, Civics, History
- Physical features — mountains, plateaus, plains, deserts, coasts
- Rivers and their origins; major dams
- States and capitals, union territories
- National symbols — flag, emblem, anthem, animal, bird, flower, tree, fruit, game
- The Constitution — Preamble, fundamental rights and duties at an introductory level
- Government structure — President, Prime Minister, Parliament, judiciary, basic idea
- Freedom movement — Gandhi, Nehru, Bose, Bhagat Singh, Tilak; major events and dates
- Monuments and which state they are in
- Tamil Nadu specifics — districts, rivers, temples, festivals. Local questions do appear
3. Defence Awareness — The Sainik School Advantage
This is the part general GK books cover worst and AISSEE rewards specifically:
- The three services — Army, Navy, Air Force: role, headquarters, current chiefs
- Ranks in each service, in order
- Insignia and uniforms at a recognition level
- The National Defence Academy and the path from Sainik School to it
- Gallantry awards — Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, and famous recipients
- Major exercises and operations in the news
- Sainik Schools and RMS — what they are, who runs them

4. Current Affairs — Thin and Recent
Headline level, from roughly the twelve months before the exam:
- Major national events and government schemes
- Sports — Olympics, Asian Games, cricket, and Indian achievements
- Awards — Bharat Ratna, Padma awards, Nobel prizes
- Books and authors in the news
- Appointments — who holds which major office
- Space and science — ISRO missions in particular
Do not try to memorise a year of newspapers. Fifteen minutes a week of a children's current-affairs digest, consistently, beats a panic sprint in December.

The re-attempt habit matters more than it sounds. GK is the section where children forget what they learned three weeks ago, and spaced repetition of wrong answers is the entire fix.
What to Skip
- Exhaustive lists of world capitals, currencies and tallest structures
- Deep history beyond the freedom movement and major ancient landmarks
- Anything in an adult competitive-exam GK book aimed at bank or SSC candidates
- Trivia with no plausible link to a Class V curriculum or to defence
The 20% rule. Across 21 years of AISSEE papers, a stable minority of GK material accounts for most of the questions: school science, Indian geography and civics, the freedom movement, national symbols, and defence awareness. That is what we teach. The rest is a hobby, not a strategy.
