The Complete AISSEE Class 6 Syllabus — and Where the Marks Actually Are

Parents usually arrive asking for "the syllabus". What they actually need is the syllabus with the marks attached, because the AISSEE Class 6 syllabus is not evenly weighted — and a study plan that treats all four sections equally is a study plan that wastes half its hours.

Here is the structure first, then the topic list, then where we tell our students to spend their time.

The Paper at a Glance

Three facts that change how you prepare:

1. Maths is half the paper. 150 of 300 marks. A child strong in Maths and average elsewhere can clear cut-offs; the reverse almost never happens.
2. There is no negative marking. Never leave a bubble empty. An informed guess is free.
3. You get about 72 seconds per question. Speed is not a bonus. It is the skill being tested.

Qualifying requires a minimum in each subject as well as an aggregate — commonly stated as 25% per subject and 40% overall, though notifications have specified category-wise aggregate minimums in some cycles. Confirm the exact rule for your year in the official bulletin at aissee.nta.nic.in. Either way, you cannot skip a section and make it up elsewhere.

Mathematics — 150 Marks

The syllabus draws on the Class V level. Broadly, expect:

• Number system — place value, Roman numerals, rounding, comparing large numbers
• The four operations, including multi-step word problems
• Factors and multiples — HCF, LCM, divisibility rules, prime numbers
• Fractions and decimals — all four operations, conversion, comparison
• Percentages and their relationship to fractions and decimals
• Unitary method, ratio and proportion
• Profit and loss, simple interest at an introductory level
• Average and simple data handling
• Measurement — length, mass, capacity, time, and conversions between units
• Geometry — lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, symmetry
• Perimeter, area and volume of simple figures
• Time, speed and distance at an introductory level
• Money, bills and simple accounts

How to actually study it

Coverage is not the problem. Almost every child can do these topics given unlimited time. The paper does not give unlimited time.

This is why we teach Vedic Maths techniques from the first month: multiplication, squaring, divisibility and fraction shortcuts that convert a 40-second calculation into a 10-second one. Techniques like these need months of repetition to become automatic — which is the single strongest argument for starting early.

Intelligence — 50 Marks

The Intelligence section is a reasoning paper, and it is the most improvable part of AISSEE because the question types repeat year after year.

• Analogies — verbal and figural
• Series completion — numbers, letters, figures
• Coding and decoding
• Odd one out / classification
• Blood relations and direction sense
• Ranking and ordering
• Mirror and water images, paper folding and cutting
• Embedded and hidden figures
• Pattern completion and matrices
• Simple logical reasoning and syllogism-style items

Language — 50 Marks

The language paper tests functional command rather than literature.

• Comprehension passages with inference questions
• Grammar — nouns, pronouns, verbs, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, articles, prepositions
• Subject–verb agreement and sentence correction
• Vocabulary — synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution
• Idioms and proverbs in common use
• Spelling and word formation
• Rearranging jumbled sentences and words
• Punctuation and direct/indirect speech basics

The highest-return habit here is unglamorous: read something in English for fifteen minutes a day, every day. A child who reads comfortably answers comprehension questions faster, which buys time for Maths.

General Knowledge — 50 Marks

GK is where parents panic unnecessarily and buy 400-page books. The section leans on school-level science and social studies far more than on current affairs trivia.

• General science at Class V level — plants, animals, human body, food and nutrition, matter, light, sound, force, simple machines
• Our environment — natural resources, pollution, conservation
• Social studies — India's states and capitals, physical features, rivers, monuments
• Civics basics — the Constitution, national symbols, government structure at an introductory level
• History basics — freedom movement, major figures, important dates
• Sports, awards, books and authors at a general level
• Defence awareness — the three services, ranks at a basic level, major exercises. This section rewards Sainik School aspirants specifically
• Current affairs of the preceding year, at a headline level
